1. What's New
=============

This section covers the new features added to the last three versions of
Corel Quattro Pro. For more information on each of these features, refer to
Chapter 2, "What's New," in the Corel Quattro Pro 5.6 for DOS Users' Guide.

What's New in Version 5.6
-------------------------
Print-One-Wide
When you print your spreadsheets, you can now choose to print them on just
one page width. All the columns will be sized to fit on one page, but the
length of your spreadsheet can be several rows and pages long. This new
option is located on the Print menu.

Alt-key Menu Selection
----------------------
You can now activate any menu on your screen by pressing the Alt key and
typing the mnemonic for that menu. The mnemonics are the highlighted letters
in each menu item. For example, to open the Edit menu, press Alt-E. You can
then select options from that menu as you normally would. You can still also
activate the menu bar using the forward slash (/).

Printer Drivers
---------------
Several new printer drivers have been added for Corel Quattro Pro 5.6 to
bring the selection up to date.

Year 2000 Compliance
--------------------
Data entry and all date functions have been updated to allow dates in the
year 2000. The window for two-digit year entry (such as 97 for 1997) has been
modified to reflect the time frame from 1951 to 2050. For example, if you
were to enter a date such as 03-10-25, it would register as March 10, 2025,
not 1925.

What Was New in Version 5.5
---------------------------
Quick Templates
SpeedFill
SpeedFormat
Centering Text Over Blocks
Coloring Cells
In-Cell Formatting
New Command-Line Option
New Macro Commands

What Was New in Version 5.0
---------------------------
Notebooks
New Toolbar Buttons
FontTable Command
Line Drawing
Print Destination
Printing 3-D Blocks
Optimizer Enhancements
File Translation
Default Settings
Expanded Memory
Hercules Support
New and Revised @ Functions
New Macro Commands

2. Hardware and Software Configuration
======================================

Problems Using a Mouse
----------------------
If you have display problems using Corel Quattro Pro with Microsoft mouse
driver version 7.04, try adding the /Y option to the command that loads the
mouse driver. For example, change the statement in your CONFIG.SYS to

    DEVICE=MOUSE.SYS /Y

If the mouse pointer doesn't appear onscreen, you may need to update your
mouse driver. See "Using Mouse Drivers with Graphics Cards" in Chapter 3 of
the Corel Quattro Pro 5.6 for DOS User's Guide.

If your mouse behaves erratically after you exit Microsoft Windows (pointer
jumps across the screen, mouse acts like the left button is always pressed,
and so on), try reloading the mouse driver from the DOS prompt or try running
Windows in Standard Mode. See your mouse and Windows documentation for details.

Video Adapters and Slide Transitions
------------------------------------
Some video adapters don't support all slide transitions. If you find a
transition that doesn't work with your video adapter, try another.

System Error 209 and Stacker
----------------------------
When using Corel Quattro Pro with Stacker version 4.0, if you experience
problems or Corel Quattro Pro displays "System Error 209," add the command-
line option /8 to your STACKER.INI file. See your Stacker documentation for
instructions on modifying STACKER.INI.

3. Using Corel Quattro Pro with Microsoft Windows
=================================================

To run Corel Quattro Pro in a small window (instead of full-screen), delete
the file EGASPL.PCX, rename it, or move it to another directory. Within Corel
Quattro Pro, set /Options|Display Mode to A: 80x25. This way, Corel Quattro Pro
won't start up in graphics mode.

Windows 3.x does not support the extended text modes of DOS applications.
To use extended text modes in Corel Quattro Pro under Windows, you MUST run
full-screen.

You may not be able to play sound files when running under Microsoft Windows
in 386/Enhanced mode, or while running under Quarterdeck DESQView. When using
the above configurations, save your notebooks before experimenting with sound
files. See Chapter 16 of the Corel Quattro Pro 5.6 for DOS User's Guide for
instructions on using sound files.

If Corel Quattro Pro doesn't create a group in Windows containing a Corel
Quattro Pro for DOS icon, create an icon manually and make it run the file
Q.PIF, which is located in the main Corel Quattro Pro directory.

4. Using Corel Quattro Pro with PenDOS
======================================

To use Corel Quattro Pro with the PenDOS operating system, start the program
with the /K command-line option. For example:
     Q /K

5. Printing
===========

The Font setting of the Normal style in a notebook controls both vertical and
horizontal spacing.

The vertical height of a row is calculated as follows:
  o A manual row-height setting overrides the default row height.
  o If the height of the row has not been manually set, the height is
     determined by either the largest font in that row or the height of
     the Normal style's font, whichever is largest.

If the selector is within an inserted graph block, /Print|Graph Print|Go
prints the inserted graph. To print a different graph, move the selector
outside the inserted graph and use /Print|Graph Print|Name to select a
different graph.

The font used for headers and footers (when using graphics quality printing)
is the Font setting of the notebook's Normal style. To change the header
and footer font, change the Font setting of the Normal style using /Style|
Define Style|Normal|Font.

6. Links in a 1-2-3 Version 2.2 File
====================================

The maximum number of spreadsheets that a Corel Quattro Pro notebook can link
to is 62. If a 2.2 file has links to more than 62 files, Corel Quattro Pro
stops reading data after the 62nd link. Data beyond that point isn't loaded.

To load a 2.2 spreadsheet with more than 62 links, convert the links into
their values first, or relocate the important links into a link library and
keep the links to 62 or less. You can also try converting the files into a
consolidated notebook using /File|Utilities|Consolidate.

7. Sample .QLL File
===================

Corel Quattro Pro includes a file called SAMPLE.QLL that contains several
add-in @functions. To load this file, use /Tools|Library|Load. Once this file
is loaded, the following additional @functions are available:

   ADD-IN @FUNCTION       DESCRIPTION
   ----------------       ----------------------------------------------------
   sinh(x)                (exp(x) - exp(-x))/2
   cosh(x)                (exp(x) + exp(-x))/2
   tanh(x)                sinh(x)/cosh(x)
   hypot(x,y)             sqrt(x^2+y^2)
   add_months(x,y) date obtained by adding y months to date x.
                          It handles the end of the month and year as follows:
                                  30-Nov-93 + 2 mon = 30-Jan-94
                                  30-Nov-93 + 3 mon = 28-Feb-94
   last_day(x) returns the last day of month of the serial date
                          number x (the time of day is dropped from the serial
                          number)

Use the following syntax with these @functions:

@LIBRARY.function (for example, @SAMPLE.sinh(x)).

8. Optimizer Tips
=================

For best performance, use Optimizer in text display mode.

If dual values in an answer report are close to zero, choose Go again a few
times to refine them. The solution will stay the same, but dual values will
converge.

9. The Background Print Spooler
===============================

If you use software that loads utilities into high memory, do not load BPS.COM
high.

If you're printing to LPT3, LPT4, PRN, or EPT with background printing enabled,
the device will be remapped to LPT1.

Like other TSR programs, if you load BPS.COM, then load other TSR programs
after it (such as DOS's SHARE command), you should unload the other TSR
programs before unloading BPS.COM.

While BPS.COM is loaded, the Ctrl-Break key is disabled.

10. Using Named Styles in a Network Environment
===============================================

In a network environment, to create a unique set of default named styles for
each user, copy the file QUATTRO.STY into each user's private directory (where
their .RF and .MP files are also stored). Then users can change their default
set of named styles without affecting other users. See Chapter 23 in the
Corel Quattro Pro 5.6 for DOS User's Guide for more information on private
directories, or contact your network administrator.

11. Label Alignment
===================

/Options|Formats|Label Align can be set for each page of the notebook. Label
Align only controls the alignment of labels that will be entered; it doesn't
affect the alignment of existing labels. Changing the alignment of labels and
numbers using the Normal style's Alignment setting affects only cells that
weren't realigned using /Style|Alignment. It also overrides the setting of
Label Align.

12. Importing Corel Quattro Pro for Windows Files
=================================================

Corel Quattro Pro for DOS can import both .WB1 (Corel Quattro Pro for
Windows 5 and earlier) and .WB2 (Corel Quattro Pro for Windows 6) files.

When importing Corel Quattro Pro for Windows files, Corel Quattro Pro for DOS
can import some formulas that exceed the normal limit of 254 characters.
However, formulas imported this way are read-only; if you try to edit them,
only the first 254 characters display on the edit line, and any characters
that don't display are lost when you press Enter. If a formula is too long to
calculate in Corel Quattro Pro for DOS, or contains @Functions that are unique
to Corel Quattro Pro for Windows, it's converted into a value.

13. Using Key Reader and 1-2-3 Compatible Menus
===============================================

To run macros written for 1-2-3 (versions 2.x and 3.x) within
Corel Quattro Pro, choose /Tools|Macro|Key Reader|Yes.

Macros assigned to Alt keys in 1-2-3 also run in Corel Quattro Pro using the
Alt key. No menus will display as the macro issues commands if Key Reader is
set to Yes. However, Corel Quattro Pro dialog boxes will appear where
appropriate. For example, /GT displays the 1-2-3 menu's graph types.

NOTE: When using Key Reader, be alert when executing 1-2-3 macros containing
{?} statements -- you may want to change those statements to {MENUCALL}
statements, and create macro menus for the corresponding 1-2-3 menu choices.
This ensures that the macro will still run within 1-2-3. If Corel Quattro Pro
encounters a macro command it can't understand, or that is not supported, an
error message appears.

To run 1-2-3 macros and use a menu system that's similar to the 1-2-3 menu
system, choose /Options|Startup|Menu System|123.

14. Upgrading From a Previous Version
=====================================

Before You Begin
----------------
If you store spreadsheet files in the Corel Quattro Pro directory, they won't
be deleted during installation, but it's a good idea to make backup copies
before you install Corel Quattro Pro.

If you have any read-only files in the Corel Quattro Pro directory, make them
read-write before you run INSTALL. If INSTALL encounters any read-only files,
installation can't be successfully completed.

Upgrading From Quattro Pro 4 or Earlier
---------------------------------------
To upgrade to Corel Quattro Pro 5.6 from an earlier version of Corel
Quattro Pro, follow the instructions in Chapter 1 of the Corel Quattro Pro 5.6
for DOS User's Guide.

If you previously used BSINST to install additional Bitstream fonts, you must
reinstall them after installing Corel Quattro Pro 5.6. If you have the newer
type of Bitstream fonts (.SPD files), you must use SPDINST.EXE to install them.

If you previously installed ProView or ProShow ValuePacks, you must reinstall
them after installing Corel Quattro Pro 5.6.

If you have custom menu systems from earlier versions, save them to a
different directory before you run INSTALL. After installing, use NEWMU.BAT
to translate them to version 5 menu files, then copy the translated files
back into the Corel Quattro Pro program directory. This retains all previous
menu structures.

Selecting Blocks in Macros
--------------------------
In macros, use {/ Macro;RetainBlock} to retain selected blocks as Corel
Quattro Pro 5.6 does; use {/ Macro;NoRetainBlock} to do block selection as
Quattro Pro 3 did. Unless you use {/ Macro;RetainBlock}, blocks are retained
like Quattro Pro 3 in macro execution.

Version 4.0 Font Table Support
------------------------------
The fonts that were set in Quattro Pro 4.0 using /Style|Font Table have been
replaced by named styles. Macros in existing .WQ1 spreadsheet files that use
the menu equivalent {/ Publish;Font} to set fonts still work, but using named
styles instead is recommended. Use /Style|Define Style|Create to create or
modify named styles, and /Style|Use Style to apply them.

Logical Expressions that Refer to Labels
----------------------------------------
In earlier versions of Quattro Pro, an expression such as +A1 = 0 would
return 1 (true) if A1 contained a label. In version 5.0 and later, this
expression returns 0 (false), making it compatible with Corel Quattro Pro
for Windows. Macros that relied on the previous behavior should be modified
to check whether a cell contains a label. For example, replace +A1=0 with:

   (+A1=0)#AND#(#NOT#@CELL("type",A1)="l")

Using a Colon in Block Names
----------------------------
In version 5.0 and later, you can't use a colon (:) in a block name, since it
now indicates the end of a group or page name when specifying a cell or block
address. If you have existing spreadsheets that use colons in block names,
change the block names and save the file (formulas that reference those blocks
aren't affected). If the file contains macros that refer to those blocks, use
/Edit|Search & Replace to remove the colons from the macro.

Using @@ without Page Names
---------------------------
In Corel Quattro Pro 5.6, when the page name is not included in the block
reference--for example, @@(A1) instead of @@(A:A1) -- Corel Quattro Pro uses
the page name of the notebook page containing the @@ function. This behavior
differs from version 5.0, which used the name of the active page.

To simulate version 5 behavior, combine @@ with one of the @CELL functions to
calculate the page name. For example, you can use the following formula inside
an @@ function to build a cell reference that is relative to the current page.
It returns the current page name.

   @MID(@CELLPOINTER("ThreeDAddress"),1,
        @FIND(":",@CELLPOINTER("ThreeDAddress"),0)-1)

Sorting Cells with Line Drawing
-------------------------------
When data is sorted, any line drawing associated with a row stays with the
row, regardless of its new position in the sort block. In earlier versions of
Quattro Pro, the line drawing stayed at the original row position.

New Sort Files
--------------
Corel Quattro Pro 5.6 includes two new .SOR files. INTL850.SOR is useful for
people using code page 850. NORDAN40.SOR is a revised version of NORDAN.SOR
(identical to the revised .SOR file available in Paradox).

Upgrading Network Installations
-------------------------------
When upgrading a network installation of Quattro Pro 4 to version 5.6, the
menu and resource files stored in each user's private directory must be
updated. These include any .MU, .MP, or .RF files. Replace the .RF files with
the updated versions and create new .MP files using MPMAKE as described in
Chapter 23 of the Corel Quattro Pro 5.6 for DOS User's Guide.

15. Video Card Display Problems
===============================

The menus in Corel Quattro Pro may appear as random characters in WYSIWYG
mode on some newer video cards. This happens because the 8x14 EGA font has
been removed from the chipset of these cards in order to make room for more
advanced features. Support for the 8x14 font is usually available through a
driver, supplied by the video card manufacturer, that is loaded into memory
prior to starting Corel Quattro Pro. Most video cards using a Cirrus Logic
chipset from the CL-GD5430 family require the 8x14 font utility called
TSRFONT.COM. The next section of this README file lists the retail
manufacturers that have used Cirrus Logic chips. The Matrox Milennium and
Mystique cards include a utility called FNT8x14.COM. If you have one of these
cards, you may switch to 80x25 text mode display with the keystrokes /ODAUQ
or exit Corel Quattro Pro by pressing Ctrl-X. The TSRFONT.COM file exists in
the Corel Quattro Pro directory. Other drivers should be available on the
Internet or from the video card manufacturer. These drivers may be added to
your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
